Sync is the gate every multicam edit has to pass through. Get it right and the rest of the edit is creative work; get it wrong and you'll chase lip-sync errors for the whole project. Premiere Pro gives you three ways to line up your angles — here's how each works, when it fails, and how to fix it.
Method 1: Timecode (if you have it)
If every camera was jam-synced to the same timecode source on set, sync is trivial: select the clips, right-click → Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence, choose Timecode. Done — and it's the only method that works for cameras that recorded no audio.
The catch: jam sync needs hardware (sync boxes on every body) and discipline (re-jamming after battery swaps). It's standard on broadcast shoots and rare everywhere else. If you're filming club nights with a mixed bag of cameras, you almost certainly don't have usable timecode — skip to Method 3.
Method 2: In points and markers (the manual fallback)
The old-school approach: find one sharp, visible-on-every-angle event — a clap, a slate, a strobe flash — and set an In point (or marker) on that frame in every clip. Then create the multicam source sequence using In Points as the sync method.
It works, it's precise, and it's tedious in direct proportion to your clip count. Where it earns its keep: clips with unusable audio, or as a rescue when automatic sync fails on one stubborn angle.
Method 3: Audio waveform sync (the one you'll actually use)
Every camera that recorded audio — even rough on-board mic audio — captured the same room. Premiere can align those waveforms automatically: select the clips, Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence, choose Audio, and set Track Channel to 1 (or Mix Down). No timecode, no clapperboard, no hardware.
This is the method that made multicam accessible to everyone, and for most footage it just works. When it doesn't, it's usually one of these:
Why audio sync fails — and the fixes
- An angle recorded no audio. Nothing to align. Fix: sync that clip manually with Method 2, or exclude it from the source sequence and place it by hand afterwards.
- Audio too quiet or too noisy. A camera at the back of the room behind a bass bin hears mostly rumble. Fix: try a different track channel, or trim the clip to a section with distinctive audio (a breakdown, an MC moment) and sync on that.
- Very long clips. Multi-hour single files give the analysis a huge search space and magnify drift. Fix: rough-trim clips to overlapping ranges before syncing.
- Copyright-mangled or processed audio. If any clip's audio was normalised, denoised or re-encoded aggressively, its waveform may no longer match. Sync from original files, always.
The drift problem on long recordings
Sync can be perfect at minute 1 and visibly off by minute 60. That's clock drift: consumer cameras don't share a sample clock, so "48 kHz" on one body is 48,000.4 Hz on another. Over an hour, that's frames of slippage. What helps:
- Match sample rates and frame rates across cameras before the shoot.
- Restart long recordings at natural breaks — each new file re-anchors sync.
- Check sync at the end of the timeline, not the start — that's where drift shows.
- For serious drift, split the offending clip at intervals and re-align each section, or use a tool that measures and corrects drift continuously.
Automating the whole thing
For years the answer here was PluralEyes; today Premiere's built-in audio sync covers most of that ground, and the interesting automation has moved downstream — because sync is only step one. You still have to cut the show afterwards.
That's the part modern tools automate end-to-end.
