How to edit a DJ set video

Editing a DJ set is not the same job as editing a podcast, and most multicam tools are built for the podcast. A podcast edit cuts to whoever is talking. A DJ set has nobody talking — it has a track, a build, a drop, and a room reacting to all three. The cut has to follow the music, and the footage you're cutting is usually a mess of long locked-off takes and short handheld bursts that were never synced to anything.

This is the workflow that holds up on a real set, stage by stage, including the parts that reliably go wrong.

1. Get the audio right before you shoot

The single decision that determines whether the edit is pleasant or miserable is made before anyone presses record: get a clean recording of the desk output. A line recording from the mixer, or a board feed into a recorder, is your master. Everything else in the edit — every sync, every cut, every beat detection — hangs off it.

Camera audio is not your soundtrack. It's a sync reference. Even a phone mic pointed at the ceiling is enough to align a camera against the master, because both heard the same room. But the audio your audience hears should be the desk feed, every time.

If the set is long, restart the desk recording at natural breaks. One four-hour file is more likely to drift, more likely to be corrupted, and much slower to analyse than four one-hour files. Overlap them by a few seconds so nothing is lost between parts.

What to do when there's no desk recording

It happens. Fall back to the best-sounding camera or a dedicated room mic near the booth, and accept that you're cutting to a room recording. Sync still works — everything heard the same room — but your final audio will carry crowd noise and room reflections you can't remove later.

2. Cover the set with roles, not just cameras

Think in roles rather than counts. Each role does a different job in the edit, and knowing which is which is what lets you cut with intent later.

  • Front of house (wide) — locked off, running the whole set. This is your safety net: whenever nothing else is usable, you cut here. It should never stop recording.
  • Deck / hands — tight on the mixer and the DJ's hands. This is where the craft is visible, and it's the shot that sells a build.
  • Back of house — behind the decks looking out at the crowd. The shot most sets are missing, and the one that makes a video feel like being there.
  • Roaming — handheld in the crowd. Faces, hands in the air, the moment the drop lands.

Three roles is a proper set. Four is comfortable. Beyond that you're adding edit time more than you're adding options.

3. The sync stage — and why it fails on the good footage

With a master recording and camera scratch audio, waveform sync aligns everything against the desk feed. For your locked-off wide, running continuously for two hours, this is close to foolproof.

It's the roaming and back-of-house footage that breaks — and it breaks for a structural reason worth understanding, because it explains a class of sync failure most editors blame on themselves.

Roaming operators don't record one continuous file. They shoot in bursts: thirty seconds here, two minutes there, stopping in between. When those clips get imported, most tools lay them end to end on the timeline, which silently throws away the gaps. A clip shot forty minutes into the night gets staged as though it happened five minutes in.

That matters because sync tools search for a match near where they think the clip belongs. Push the assumed position far enough from the truth and the high-resolution local search stops covering the right part of the set. What's left is a whole-set search — and in electronic music, where a phrase repeats every eight or sixteen bars for an hour, a thirty-second clip matches convincingly in dozens of places. The tool doesn't fail loudly. It picks one, and it might be the wrong drop.

The tell: your long cameras sync perfectly, and your short handheld clips are subtly, confidently wrong — often out by an exact musical phrase, which is why it can look right until you watch the hands.

How to protect yourself

  • Check the short clips specifically. Long angles are the ones that sync reliably. Spot-check every burst clip against the DJ's hands, not the crowd.
  • Don't wipe your camera's clock. The recording timestamps in the files are the only surviving record of the gaps between bursts. A tool that reads them can work out where a clip really belongs even when the staged position is wildly off.
  • Sync before you cut, always. A cut built on a bad sync has to be rebuilt, not fixed.

4. Cut to the music, not to a metronome

Once everything is aligned, the cut is a musical decision. The structure of a set gives you the map:

  • Intro / build — longer holds. Let shots breathe. Favour the deck and hands: this is where anticipation is built.
  • Drop — your hardest cut lands on the drop, not after it. Then move: crowd, back of house, wide. This is where the energy of the room is the story.
  • Breakdown — slow the cutting rate right down. Long crowd shots and faces work here.
  • Peak — the fastest sustained cutting of the set, but keep returning to the wide so the viewer stays oriented.
  • Outro — long, settling shots. Let it end.

Cut on phrase boundaries — every eight or sixteen bars — rather than on every beat. Beat-level cutting reads as frantic within about thirty seconds. Phrase-level cutting reads as musical.

5. Keep the audio honest to the end

Before you export, confirm three things:

  1. The master desk recording is on A1, continuous, and is the only audible audio.
  2. Every camera's scratch audio is muted — present for sync, silent in the mix.
  3. The picture still matches the audio at the end of the set, not just the start. Drift shows up last.

Where the time actually goes

On a three-camera, two-hour set, sync is maybe twenty minutes and the creative cut is a couple of hours. The rest — often the bulk of a day — goes on checking short clips, fixing the ones that landed wrong, and rebuilding sections where a bad sync wasn't spotted until later.

Common questions

How do you sync DJ set footage without timecode?

Record the desk output as a master track, then use audio waveform sync to align every camera's scratch audio against it. All cameras heard the same room, so this works even when nothing shared timecode. Keep the master on A1 and camera audio on A2 and below.

Why does multicam sync fail on roaming or back-of-house footage?

Roaming and BOH operators shoot in short bursts. Most tools stage those clips end to end, discarding the real gaps, so a clip's assumed position drifts further from the truth with every break. A short clip in repetitive music can then match convincingly in several places at once.

How many cameras do you need for a DJ set?

Should you cut a DJ set on the beat?
