If you're filming a DJ set, the audio decision you make before the night starts matters more than any camera you bring. A clean desk recording gives you a soundtrack the audience will actually enjoy and the reference every camera gets synced against. Get it wrong and you're stuck with crowd noise, camera compression, and a sync job that fights you the whole way.

Which output to take
Most club mixers give you more than one option. In order of preference:
- REC out — a dedicated record output. Best choice where it exists, because it's independent of the master fader. When the DJ pulls the master down at the end of the set, your recording keeps going.
- Booth out — feeds the booth monitors. Usually clean, though it has its own level control that someone may adjust mid-set.
- Master out — works, but everything the DJ does to the master fader happens to your recording too.
- USB / built-in recording — many modern mixers record internally to USB. Genuinely good quality and one less box, but check the format and that the stick is fast enough.
Levels: leave headroom, always
Club mixers put out hot signals, and DJs push levels up as the night builds. Set your recorder so the loudest moment you expect peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS, and resist making it look "full."
The asymmetry is the whole point: a quiet recording can be raised later with no real loss. A clipped one is permanently damaged, and clipping on a bass-heavy set is unmistakable and unfixable.
Check the level again about twenty minutes in, once the room has filled and the DJ has settled — not during soundcheck when the system is half up.
What to record onto
- A dedicated field recorder (Zoom, Tascam and similar) — the reliable option. Runs on its own batteries, doesn't care what your cameras are doing.
- The mixer's USB recording — excellent when available, zero extra kit.
- A laptop — highest quality and most flexible, and also the most likely thing to sleep, run out of battery, or get knocked in a booth.
Whatever you use, record a backup. A second recorder on the same feed, or the mixer's internal recording running alongside your external one. Sets don't happen twice.
Split the recording at natural breaks
Resist recording four hours into one file. Split between DJs, or at any natural break.
Several shorter files are less likely to be corrupted, less prone to clock drift accumulating across the night, and much faster to work with when you get to the edit. Overlap them by a few seconds so nothing falls through the gap between parts.
Camera audio still matters — just not as your soundtrack
Every camera should still be recording audio, even badly. Camera scratch audio is what lets waveform sync line each angle up against your desk recording — both heard the same room, which is all the alignment needs.
So: leave audio on, don't mute your cameras, and don't worry about the quality of it. Its only job is to be recognisable. The audio your audience hears is the desk feed.
The mistakes that actually ruin recordings
- Recording off the master with no headroom. DJ pushes it, you clip, it's gone.
- No backup. One card failure and the night is unusable.
- Not checking levels after the room fills. Soundcheck levels lie.
- Muting camera audio "because we're using the desk feed" — this removes your ability to sync at all.
- One enormous file. Slow, fragile, and drifts.
- Forgetting to press record. It happens to everyone once. Check the timer is moving, not just that the light is on.
